Sarah and I went to Letchworth Indian Mounds today. It was a perfect day to go, not a soul in sight. In the late 90's I took care of Mr. Letchworth as a patient and he invited me to visit this site. It was his private property at the time. The State did not own it until a few years later. Dale and I walked to the top. It is one of the tallest in the State of Florida, 46 feet. We were winded when we reached the top, mostly because it is straight up. At the time there were hundreds of sparkleberry trees at the top and we snagged a few to plant at home. We planted them where we live now but they did not live. Dale teased me for a long time, he said they didn't live because the Indians put a curse on them. He would look out the window of our old house and swear he saw Indians running around those dead trees in our yard. Not very funny, but that's Dale dry sense of humor for you. There are four mounds on this property.
Base of the biggest of the four mounds.
The backside of the mound.
This is the backside also, Sarah and I climbed up alittle ways. Unfortunately, I had read the warning to Sarah earlier about staying on the path. Being the law abiding citizen that she is, she got worried at about this point because she said we were breaking the law so we had to turn around and head back down. It was a perfect day, there was no one else there so you could actually walk to the top.
